Here you will find the best approximate information on optimal sizing that we can offer. Sizing varies by the manufacturer, type of bike, and other variants. Sizing can also be individually subjective so If you have any more specific requirements regarding this information, we highly recommend calling our expert staff on 01268 695877 or coming into the shop.
What size bike do I need?
Getting the right size makes a bike comfortable, safe and more fun to ride. Start with the quick chart below using your height. Check your inside leg if you're between sizes, then look at the brand's own chart, because every brand sizes a little differently.
Not sure? Call us on 01268 695877 or pop into the shop in Canvey Island. We'll check your size on a real bike, free of charge.
General size chart: Adult bikes and e-bikes (best to check individual brands below)
| Your height | Inside leg (approx.) | Road and gravel (cm) | Mountain bike | Hybrid and city |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150–157 cm (4′11″–5′2″) | 66–71 cm (26–28″) | XS / 47–50 | XS / 13–14″ | XS / 14″ |
| 158–167 cm (5′2″–5′6″) | 71–76 cm (28–30″) | S / 50–53 | S / 15–16″ | S / 15–16″ |
| 168–177 cm (5′6″–5′10″) | 76–81 cm (30–32″) | M / 53–56 | M / 17–18″ | M / 17–18″ |
| 178–185 cm (5′10″–6′1″) | 81–86 cm (32–34″) | L / 56–58 | L / 19–20″ | L / 19–20″ |
| 186–193 cm (6′1″–6′4″) | 86–91 cm (34–36″) | XL / 58–61 | XL / 21–22″ | XL / 21–22″ |
| 194 cm+ (6′4″+) | 91 cm+ (36″+) | XXL / 61+ | XXL / 23″+ | XL–XXL |
Bands don't overlap: if you're exactly on a boundary, see "Between two sizes?" below. Some brands (for example Trek) also offer an M/L size that sits between M and L.
E-bikes: Electric bikes use the same frame sizes as the non-electric version, so use the same row. Electric mountain bikes often have long dropper posts, so check that your inside leg suits the dropper length listed in the spec. If in doubt, ask us.
Women's bikes: Most brands now make one frame range for everyone and size it by height. Where a brand makes women's-specific models, they usually have a shorter reach and narrower bars. Use the same height chart, then check the brand section.
How to measure yourself
Height: Stand barefoot with your back against a wall and look straight ahead. Have someone mark the top of your head with a flat object, such as a book, and measure from the floor.
Inside leg (inseam):
- Stand barefoot against a wall, feet about 15–20 cm apart, like you're standing over a bike.
- Push a hardback book up between your legs, spine upwards, firmly, like a saddle.
- Keep it level and mark the top of the spine on the wall.
- Measure from the floor to the mark. Do it twice and use the average.
Your inside leg matters most for standover (clearance over the top tube) and for whether the saddle can go low enough, especially with a dropper post.
Between two sizes?
- Go smaller if you prefer a more upright, relaxed position, want a more playful feel off-road, have shorter arms for your height, or are buying for a growing teen.
- Go larger if you prefer a stretched-out, stable position, ride long distances or fast descents, or have long arms and a long torso for your height.
- On mountain bikes, check reach (how long the bike feels) and seat tube length (can a long dropper fit?). On road bikes, check stack and reach.
- A shop fit check takes 10 minutes. Come and sit on both sizes.
Size charts by brand
Brand sections for the size guide page. Every figure comes from the brand’s own website or official distributor, checked on 26 October 2026. Brands change sizing between model years, so the exact bike’s own chart always takes priority.
Trek {#trek}
Trek sizes most adult bikes by letter: XS, S, M, ML, L and XL, with 2XS and 2XL on some mountain bikes. ML is the size Trek calls an “extra-medium”, for riders who fall between M and L. Trek gives an inside leg (inseam) range for every adult size as well as height.
Trek has started moving road bikes from cm sizes to letter sizes. Newer models such as Madone Gen 8 and Checkpoint Gen 3 use letters, with the old cm size in brackets. Some bikes, such as Domane AL Gen 4, are still sized in cm. Kids’ bikes go by wheel size.
E-bikes use the same chart as the non-electric family. For example, FX+ 7 uses the same chart as FX 2, and Rail+ uses the same bands as Trek’s other mountain bikes.

Between sizes?
Trek says that if you’re between sizes, the choice depends on your riding style and body shape. A longer reach (the bigger size) is more stable, especially on fast descents, and suits riders with a long torso or arms for their height. A shorter reach (the smaller size) feels more nimble and playful, and suits riders with a shorter torso or arms. For kids between sizes, Trek’s UK stores suggest checking inside leg and trying both if you can.

Cube {#cube}
Cube names its sizes differently for each type of bike. Mountain bikes use letters, XS to XXL. Some models mix wheel sizes across the range: the Aim, for example, has 27.5″ wheels on XS and S and 29″ wheels on M to XL. Road bikes are sized in cm (the Attain runs 47–62 cm), and so are trekking bikes (the Kathmandu and Nature run 46–62 cm). Kids’ bikes go by wheel size.
Cube’s height bands overlap, so near a boundary two sizes can both fit. Electric models use the same size names, but the size range can differ. The Kathmandu Hybrid e-bike, for example, starts at 50 cm, while the non-electric Kathmandu starts at 46 cm. Always check the exact model.

Cube’s chart gives height only, with no inside leg figures. Cube doesn’t publish general between-sizes advice. It asks you to always confirm the frame size with an authorised Cube dealer, which is something we can do for you in the shop.
Cube’s size tool
Every bike on Cube’s UK website has a Your size tab with Cube’s own sizing calculator for that model, for example on the Aim One. This is the most precise check for a specific Cube.
Height ranges are Cube France’s published bands (in French, no model year shown; checked 26 October 2026). ft/in conversions are ours.

Scott {#scott}
Scott sizes adult bikes by letter. For 2027 the Addict road bike runs from XXS to XXL, and most mountain bikes run from XS or S to XL or XXL. Scott publishes a chart for each model family on its product pages. The charts are bar graphs against 10 cm height bands (under 165, 165–175, 175–185, 185–195 and over 195 cm), and neighbouring sizes overlap.
Scott’s adult charts don’t print an exact start and end height for each size. We haven’t turned them into figures, because that would mean guessing. Use the official chart link for your model below, or Scott’s Smartfit tool, which works out your size from your body measurements.
Adult size charts by model

Between sizes and Scott’s size tool
Scott doesn’t publish general between-sizes advice. It recommends its Fit Finder (called Smartfit on its UK product pages) as a starting point, then advice from an authorised dealer or a professional bike fit. We can help with that in the shop.

Whyte {#whyte}
Whyte sizes its bikes XS to XL and doesn’t make gender-specific bikes. Every Whyte product page has its own size chart. Each chart shades an overlap zone where two sizes meet: Whyte’s example is that a 178 cm (5′10″) rider could ride either M or L.
Whyte’s gravel bikes were sized 50, 52, 54, 56 and 58 cm, which Whyte says are effectively XS, S, M, L and XL. Whyte also says its gravel bikes generally size larger than other brands’ road and gravel bikes, so a rider who is a 56 cm on another brand will probably need a 54 cm Whyte. Current Verro and Tourus listings use XS to XL.

- Secta 26 MX: 12 years and up, 137–152 cm (4′6″–5′0″) tall.
- Sythe 27: for riders 14 years and up (Whyte gives no height).
Between sizes?
Whyte’s advice is to size up if you want a more stable bike, especially at speed and on descents, and to size down if you want a more agile bike that’s easier to move around. Whyte also suggests going smaller if you have long legs and a shorter torso and arms, and larger if you have a longer torso and arms. It doesn’t publish inside leg figures.

Amflow {#amflow}
Amflow sizes the PL Carbon e-MTB M, L, XL and XXL, with no small. The height ranges overlap widely, so if you’re 175–178 cm, for example, three sizes are listed as fitting. Reach and standover can help you choose.
| Size | Rider height | Reach (mm) | Standover (mm) | Crank length (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M | 162–178 cm (5′4″–5′10″) | 452 | 780 | 155 |
| L | 170–185 cm (5′7″–6′1″) | 475 | 785 | 155 |
| XL | 175–191 cm (5′9″–6′3″) | 500 | 790 | 160 |
| XXL | 185–201 cm (6′1″–6′7″) | 525 | 795 | 160 |
Amflow PL Carbon. Amflow’s FAQ lists M, L and XL only; the XXL figure is from Amflow’s sizing guide.
Between sizes?
Amflow says a rider with long arms or legs for their height may suit a different size from the one their height suggests. It adds that this is rare, and a different stem length or a small saddle adjustment is often the answer rather than a different frame. Amflow recommends an in-person fitting at an authorised store, which we can do for you.

Orbea {#orbea}
Orbea sizes mountain, gravel and urban bikes by letter (S–XL or XS–XXL) and its Orca and Avant road bikes by numbers from 47 to 60. Each Orbea bike page has its own “Size guide by height”, which Orbea marks as approximate. The height ranges overlap a lot, so most riders fit two sizes.
Electric and non-electric versions of the same bike usually share the same height chart. The Rise SL e-MTB matches the Occam SL, and the Gain e-road bike matches the Terra gravel bike. Orbea also lists the dropper post, stem, crank and bar fitted to each size.

Orbea doesn’t publish inside leg figures or between-sizes advice on its current UK bike pages, and its old general size guide page has been removed. There is no Orbea size calculator. Use the “View size guide” link on each bike’s page.
These are the current models on Orbea’s UK site, checked 26 October 2026. Orbea’s Dutch pages label some of them 2027. Orbea gives cm only.

Claud Butler, Dawes and Falcon {#claud-butler}
These are traditional British brands that mostly size frames in inches. They are handled by Tandem Group Cycles (TGC), which doesn’t publish a brand-wide chart. Some TGC product pages give a height range for each frame size, so we’ve listed those below.
Claud Butler Explorer 1.0 hybrid (700c)
| Frame size | Rider height |
|---|---|
| 16″ | 152–163 cm (5′0″–5′4″) |
| 18″ | 163–173 cm (5′4″–5′8″) |
| 20″ | 170–183 cm (5′7″–6′0″) |
| 22″ | 178–191 cm (5′10″–6′3″) |
From the Explorer 1.0 and 1.0 EQ product pages.
Falcon e-bikes
| Model | Frame | Rider height |
|---|---|---|
| Falcon Liberty crossbar e-hybrid | One size | 162–188 cm (5′4″–6′2″) |
| Falcon Liberty low step e-hybrid | One size | 152–178 cm (5′0″–5′10″) |
| Falcon Turbine e-MTB | One size | 162–188 cm (5′4″–6′2″) |
| Falcon Compact and Breeze low step folding e-bikes | One size | 152–188 cm (5′0″–6′2″) |
Dawes, and other Claud Butler and Falcon models
TGC doesn’t publish rider heights on its Dawes adult bike pages. Most other Claud Butler models give frame sizes only; for example, the Edge HT low step comes in 14″–18″ frames and is described as for “teenagers and above”. Falcon and Dawes kids’ bikes are mostly described by age, for example “approx 5 yrs+” for the Dawes Thunder 16″. One exception is the Falcon Cobalt 20″, which gives ages 7–9 and an inside leg of 53–60 cm (21″–25″). For these bikes, call us and we’ll check the frame against your height and inside leg.

BMX and dirt jump {#bmx}
BMX bikes are sized by top tube length rather than frame size. A longer top tube gives more room and stability, and a shorter one is easier to throw around. Radio publishes the clearest official chart, shown below.
Radio freestyle BMX complete bikes (MY26)
| Age | Rider height | Wheel | Top tube |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3–6 | 90–115 cm (2′11″–3′9″) | 12″ | 12″ |
| 5–8 | 110–130 cm (3′7″–4′3″) | 14″ | 13″ |
| 7–10 | 125–140 cm (4′1″–4′7″) | 16″ | 15″ |
| 9–11 | 135–150 cm (4′5″–4′11″) | 18″ | 17″ |
| 10–12 | 145–160 cm (4′9″–5′3″) | 20″ | 19.5″–20.25″ |
| 11–13 | 155–170 cm (5′1″–5′7″) | 20″ | 20.5″ |
| 13–15 | 165–175 cm (5′5″–5′9″) | 20″ | 20.25″–20.75″ |
| 15–17 | 170–180 cm (5′7″–5′11″) | 20″ | 20.75″–21″ |
| 17+ | 180 cm (5′11″) + | 20″ | 21″+ |
- SE Bikes lists a suggested rider size on each model page. For example, the Ripper Jr (18.5″ top tube) suits riders 130–148 cm (4′3″–4′10″).
- Radio also publishes separate charts for race and dirt jump bikes.
- WeThePeople, Collective, DMR and Python: we couldn’t find a published rider-height chart on their official sites. WeThePeople describes each bike by top tube length on its bikes page. Ask us and we’ll match the top tube to your height.
Radio gives height in cm and total inches; we converted the inches to ft/in.

Squish and Hoy kids’ bikes {#squish}
Squish and Hoy are both distributed by TGC. Each model lists a minimum age, minimum height and minimum inside leg. Squish models are named by wheel size, so the Squish 16 has 16″ wheels. Use the minimum inside leg as the main check, because it decides whether your child can reach the ground.
Squish
| Model | Age | Minimum height | Minimum inside leg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squish 12 balance bike | 2+ | 85 cm (2′9″) | 30 cm (12″) |
| Squish 14 balance bike | 3+ | 95 cm (3′1″) | 36 cm (14″) |
| Squish 14 | 3+ | 98 cm (3′3″) | 40 cm (16″) |
| Squish 16 | 4+ | 104 cm (3′5″) | 47 cm (19″) |
| Squish 18 | 5+ | 110 cm (3′7″) | 50 cm (20″) |
| Squish 20 | 6+ | 113 cm (3′8″) | 53.5 cm (21″) |
Hoy {#hoy}
| Model | Age | Minimum height | Minimum inside leg |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hoy Weee! 12 balance bike | 2+ | 85 cm (2′9″) | 30 cm (12″) |
| Hoy Pentland 20 | 6+ | 113 cm (3′8″) | 53.5 cm (21″) |
| Hoy Pentland 24 | 8+ | 127 cm (4′2″) | 57 cm (22″) |
| Hoy Pentland 26 | 9+ | 145 cm (4′9″) | 70 cm (28″) |
Neither brand publishes a maximum height for each size, so as a child nears the next model’s minimums, it’s time to size up.

Kids' bikes: size by inside leg, not age
Children grow at different rates, so measure their inside leg (as above, without shoes) and use the brand's minimum inside leg for each model. Age is only a rough guide.
| Wheel size | Typical age | Typical inside leg |
|---|---|---|
| Balance bike (10–12″) | 18 months–3 yrs | 30–38 cm |
| 14″ | 3–5 yrs | 38–48 cm |
| 16″ | 4–6 yrs | 45–55 cm |
| 20″ | 6–9 yrs | 52–62 cm |
| 24″ | 8–12 yrs | 60–70 cm |
| 26″ / 27.5″ small adult | 11 yrs+ | 68 cm+ |
Tip: Your child should be able to put both feet flat on the floor while sitting on the saddle (balance bikes), or the balls of both feet (pedal bikes). Avoid buying "to grow into" by more than one size; a bike that's too big is harder to control.
FAQ
Is bike size the same across brands? No. A Medium from one brand can be closer to another brand's Large. Use the quick chart to narrow it down, then check the brand section.
What if my height and inside leg point to different sizes? Go with inside leg for standover and saddle height, then think about reach. Long legs and a short body usually suit the smaller size. Call us and we'll help.
Are e-bikes sized differently? No, the same frame sizes apply. Just make sure the saddle can go low enough for you (check the dropper post length on e-MTBs).
Can I swap parts to make a bike fit better? Small changes are easy: stem length, bar height, saddle position, a shorter dropper. They can't fix a frame that's two sizes out. We can advise you when you buy.
Can I try a bike before I buy? Yes. Visit our shop in Canvey Island to sit on in-stock bikes and get a free fit check.
What if the size I ordered doesn't fit? Contact us within 30 days. See our Returns & Refunds policy for how to return or exchange a bike.
What size is right for Cycle to Work? Same as any other purchase. Tell us your height and inside leg when you email, and we'll confirm the size before your voucher is used.
Charts are a guide. Brands sometimes change geometry between model years, so check the bike's own geometry or ask us if you're unsure.
